I can’t claim to have ever really understood the meaning of Einstein’s Theory of Relativity (in fact I earned a “D” in freshman physics at Georgia Tech), but I can certainly share my interpretation of it: that the years become shorter, and pass with increasing speed as one ages.
Who can ever forget being a four or five year-old, and waiting for – what seemed an eternity – for Santa to finally place that very special and long-awaited for toy under the tree? Ironically the opposite is true for any parent! No sooner have the decorations been stored away, but it seems necessary to begin searching for that “impossible to find” Tickle-Me-Elmo or Cabbage Patch doll!!
Our three beautiful daughters were born in 1981, 1983, and 1987. As I held each one for the very first time, I was filled with an incredible and unmatched sense of elation and gratitude, and in those very special moments, time stood still!
But Einstein’s Theory kicked in shortly after each child was born, and the years of early fatherhood flew by! Pushing each in turn on the backyard swing quickly morphed into piano recitals and proms, competitions and college, graduations and milestones in –seemingly – the blink of an eye!
On the first of last May, I had the very special privilege and joy of walking my youngest daughter down the aisle and, with her mother, giving her away in marriage to a terrific young man we’ve come to love very much. And, at that marvelous moment, once again – for me at least, time stood still.

As I held each one for the very first time, I was filled with an incredible and unmatched sense of elation and gratitude, and in those very special moments, I recognized how truly blessed I am! You see, I’m getting a second chance to finally get a handle on that “Relativity thing” as I push each one, in turn, on that old backyard swing….
